Got it my first audax ride for the year today and what a day for it. Blue skies, sunshine and temperature around 6 degrees. Perfect!
Started the year’s audaxing with the same ride I did in January 2014. Hills and Mills 102km Brevet Populaire. Here’s this years ride on Strava.
Riding through deepest darkest Sussex. Started from Hailsham. Controls at Mayfield out and Mayfield back, plus 5 information controls.
Very scenic all the way. Pretty lumpy. 1850m of climbing. This included no.19 on the 100 Greatest cycling climbs (UK) list “The Wall” aka Kidds Hill.
The route takes in a chunk of Ashdown Forest home to AA Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh hence passing by Pooh car park. Just in case anyone thought this was a facility for desperate travellers.
If you’ve ever considered having a go at Audax events I recommend you do. Very grass roots. None of the corporate nonsense you get in sportive events. I paid £7.50 to take part in this ride which is fairly typical of the cost. Hot drinks and food supplied at the start. Often en route and at the end as well The populaires are all under 200km to be completed within a range of 14-25 kph with any stops you take included.
